Designing commercial custom wine cellars involves a meticulous process to create a space that not only stores wine but also enhances its preservation, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal. In today’s vibrant dining scene, the charm of a fine meal often includes an exquisite wine selection. Restaurants, keen on enhancing their ambiance and offering a curated experience, are turning to custom wine cellars. These specially designed spaces are becoming a sought-after addition, blending functionality and aesthetics to elevate the overall dining experience.

Commercial Custom Wine Cellars Project: The Girl & the Goat Chicago

The Girl & the Goat is a renowned restaurant located in Chicago, Illinois, known for its innovative menu, lively ambiance, and acclaimed chef, Stephanie Izard. This culinary gem has captured the hearts and taste buds of locals and visitors alike, earning praise for its inventive dishes and vibrant atmosphere. It was recently named #4 in the top best restaurants in the U.S. by Travelers’ Choice! We were therefore very excited to take on this high-profile commercial wine display project.

This was a renovation project updating a cluttered area behind a bar to give it more purpose-built wine storage and display ambiance. Transforming a small space behind the bar of this high-end restaurant posed a thrilling challenge. Originally, it was a plain area with square shelves and a small wine cooler. The goal? To turn it into a jaw-dropping wine storage and display spot.

Custom Wine Racks Designed for Maximum Visual Appel and Functionality

The wine cellar style design included horizontal wine bottle racking, allowing label forward displays and replacing a small wine refrigerator, an increased capacity of refrigerated wine storage. All this had to be achieved within a very tight and fixed budget.

The custom wine racks were constructed in stained and lacquered mahogany and enclosed a Climadiff Climagan Diva 315 Multi-temperature Wine Cabinet. The racks consisted of a mix of high capacity 750ml standard racking and ‘X’ bins for bulk storage. We have included the design drawings as well as the before and after images, so you can see the detail of the wine cellar racks and their layout design elements.
For the refrigerated Climagan wine cabinet we made use of a basic package but upgraded it with an additional seven shelves giving it a total of fifteen.

As is often the case with commercial projects, as well as the size constraints we had a very narrow window in which to start and finish the whole project. Danny and Glenn, our partner contractors for the Chicago area ‘Big City Wine Cellar Builders‘, successfully removed all the old shelving, refinished the walls, and installed the new wine cellar racking in record time, in just a 24-hour window, over a holiday period. All in time for the grand opening and without any hiccups, sorry… pun intended!
