Will It Work For You?
A new product has just been released and it is causing quite a stir. This is a truly great fully ducted wine cellar cooling system by CellarPro, it is extremely versatile and can be configured to be used in many different ways. For example, the cooling units can be stacked vertically when floor space is limited; or they can be stacked horizontally when ceiling height is limited; or the evaporator and the condensing unit can be split apart, and the condensing unit even can be placed outdoors, when space or access are limited
This new Wine Cellar Air Handler comes in both the 6500 and the 8500 sizes. Therefore, these units are meant for larger cellars, up to 1750 cubic feet and up to 2500 cubic feet, respectively, with proper insulation and vapor barrier installed in the wine cellar. The self-contained (ie Horizontal and Vertical) units are pre-charged and factory set so that they do NOT have to be installed by an HVAC contractor.
There are several different ways these wine cooling systems can be installed:
- These wine cellar cooling units can be placed horizontally or vertically.
- They can be used as one unit or separated as a split system.
- An optional remote digital display is available for use inside or outside the cellar when the units are ducted to and from the cellar.

- The evaporator can be ducted into and from the cellar with the condenser attached.
- The evaporator can be split and connected to the evaporator via 2 copper lines.
- The evaporator could be placed inside the room and connected through the wall to the condenser via 2 copper lines.
- Each unit is 18.6w x 18.6 d x 19.3 h… so each section is quite large.
- The condenser can be connected to the evaporator directly.
- The condenser can be “split” and connected to it via 2 copper lines and be separated up to 100 line ft. away.
- The units can be ducted to the wine cellar
from the evaporator and to the outdoors or another large space from the condenser up to 100 equivalent ft. (50 ft. per duct). - The units are also available so that the condenser can be placed indoors or outdoors to temperatures from -20 degrees to 110 degrees when used with the optional low ambient kit.
The way you will install your unit must be determined before ordering to receive the correct unit configuration.
Optional Humidifiers and Heaters are available that can be installed at the factory upon placing your order. These must be factory installed and cannot be added later.
The integrated Humidifier is perfect for increasing the humidity level in commercial or residential wine cellars. They are controlled by digital controllers that are mounted inside the wine room and are wired to the humidifier that is mounted to the rear of the Air Handler. Humidity levels can be set from 5% to 70% in 5% increments.
The 900W integrated Heater is for cellars that are unheated and exposed to conditions below 55 degrees. When the heater system is added, it is integrated with and controlled by the digital control panel and automatically adds heat or refrigeration based on the temperature inside the cellar. A safety thermostat provides protection from overheating.
Here is a photo of recent install of an AH6500Sch CellarPro system installed by one of our partner contractors in Memphis, TN. Located in the attic above the wine cellar the air was ducted to and from the wine cellar. The hot air was ducted outdoors and the fresh air was received from the fully insulated attic. The contractor who installed this unit purchased an extra duct collar for the unit. He is currently getting his supply air from the attic. If he finds that the attic gets too hot over the summer, he will change out the grill to the duct collar, adding a duct to the outside for the supply air.

The Residential Wine Closet Cabinets on our website are becoming a major product line for us this year. The level of interest in these types of pre-built wine storage and display closet cabinets is clearly on the rise.
Many home owners are finding that these types of pre-built wine cabinets are the perfect solution for those with only a small amount of available space but who still would like to have the look of a built in wine cellar in their home or condominium.
Home builders are more and more adding them as an option to be added for new home sales. Realtors are often suggesting them as an add-on for home buyers who love wine want a place to store their wine collection. Home owners are finding it an inexpensive alternative to adding full custom wine cellars to their home.
In this video of a wine closet cabinet installed in Dallas Texas we show just how easy they are to install.
These Wine Closet Cabinets can easily be fit into the limited space of a small closet. They do not require a full build out and re-construction of the room. They simply require an opening of 34″ wide (or more) with a minimum of at least 30″ deep and 80″ high. This space will also require a dedicated 110 outlet at the back or side, which can easily be added if it is not already in place.
The wine closet cellar cabinets arrive fully built. All you need to do is attach the top trim and side flanges, plug in the cord, slide it into the closet area, and add molding of your choice to match your decor. (Moldings not included) There you have it! A closet wine cellar that looks like it was custom built for your home.
The cabinets usually include wine cabinet cooling units. The Whisperkool 2500 front vented wine cooling units are commonly used. These keep you wine collection in the ideal environment for preservation and aging.
These wine closet cabinets typically include a display row with pre-installed led lighting to make the closet a really interesting highlighted feature in your home. Additional display rows can be added if looks, rather than the amount of storage, is your priority. They include a full glass display door to enable you to view and show off your wine collection.
Installing a closet cabinet will generally cost you about 50-85% less than doing a full custom wine closet build out. The wine closets are available in a choice of light, medium, or dark wood finishes. You can add additional display rows and you can have the cabinet made wider to fit larger closets.
This Wine Closet Cabinet shown here was installed in Chicago Illinois and was created using a space just 34″ wide, 30″ deep, 80″ high. It can store up to 166 bottles in the racking plus there is a little extra room for bulk storage either side of the cooling unit which can be used for larger format wine bottles.
The estimated cost for these wine cabinets as shown above including shipping, a local contractor to install it, a dedicated electrical outlet in the back of your closet, removal of your closet door, making the opening the correct size, if necessary… and the addition of molding around the finished cabinet…… usually comes out at less than $5000 all in!
The Cabinet only is $3895.00 plus shipping to your location.

Why would I look at purchasing modular wine racks?
What does “modular” mean anyway?
How much installation is really required?
These are questions we hear every day from our clients who need to understand just what a modular wine rack really is.
The “Modular” in wine racks means that these racks come in specific components that are specific sizes and are pre-assembled. Yes, pre-assembled. Unlike our other traditional kit and custom racks, the Kessick series modular wine racks do not require you to put them together when they arrive. They may however require “installation”. What that means is that you will need to attach the different components together and also attach them to your wall. You may need to attach the crown and base moldings. They may also need to be mitered on site to fit. If you have requested a led lighting option, those lights are already installed into the racks. Easy, Easy, Easy!
The Kessick series is made from Sapele mahogany. Unlike the mahogany variety of our traditional kit and custom racks which is a light brown color, the Sapele mahogany is a much deeper brown in color giving it a deep rich look that will get even darker with age. The lacquer option is suggested and will give your racks a beautiful furniture finish.
Kessick Modular Wine Racks come in two core styles. There are the more traditional style or the Kessick Estate Design Series and the modern style or the Kessick Contemporary Series.
The Kessick Estate Series modular racks are higher priced than the traditional…. But… weighing everything in…. not having to add a stain to get a darker color, not needing to pay for assembly and installation of the racks…. AND the great price for the pre-installed led lights… and the lacquer… You may come out at close to the same price, if not lower.
The Kessick Estate Series wine racks are currently offered as a choice for a one wall design. If you have one wall to rack and your ceiling height is at least 85” high, this series may be perfect for you.
The Kessick Contemporary Series is unlike anything you have seen before. Sleek and modern, this series of 20 different rack groupings can be used with one grouping on a wall as a focal point or mixed with several groupings to create an entire wall of contemporary racks. Lacquered mahogany, black lacquer, and brushed aluminum (stainless steel look) finishes are found in the various modules.
Things to remember about our Kessick Modular racks:
- Pre-assembled
- Sapele mahogany
- Lacquer option available
- Estate Series side panels and back options available
- Led lighting option available
- Beautifully crafted
- Traditional or contemporary designs
Not everyone has the budget or space available in their home to convert an entire room into a dedicated custom wine cellar. The choices for those people has typically been to buy a kit wine rack and then try to figure out how to assemble it. Often unfinished and looking like a grid of wood pieces these products do not necessarily work in every home.
Announcing a new type of wine storage solution – Modular Wine Racks from Kessick
These products have more of a furniture look, come fully finished with lighting and are built in a very strong type of mahogany called Sapele. Perfect for taking with you should you move home, these modular wine racks are built to last a lifetime.
See our new Kessick Modular Wine Racks page and watch the video tour of all the options. At Wine Cellar Specialists we believe these products add significantly to our wine furniture and wine cellar design options and we believe you will too!
Why do I need to “Seal” my wine cellar?
Only this week I was confronted by a builder in Texas who was showing me the room that he was turning into a custom wine cellar for his customer.
He mentioned he knew about adding the correct vapor barrier and insulation. Then, in the next breath, he said “and I am leaving ½” open below the door so that the room gets good air circulation!”
Air circulation coming from the next room in your home into your wine cellar is exactly what you do NOT want.
Your wine cellar must be sealed like a package. See How to Build Your Wine Cellar. The reason for the vapor barrier is to insure that the temperature and humidity inside the room, controlled by your wine cellar cooling units, is kept at a lower temperature and a higher humidity than in the rest of your home.
To age and preserve wine properly you need to maintain the very stable temperature of 55 to 60 degrees and 50 to 70 percent humidity inside you wine cellar. Leaving a gap under the door allows the cold air to escape and warm air to enter the room, creating difficulty maintaining the correct temperature and humidity. All air going into our coming out of the room should be going through the wine cellar climate control system you have chosen.
Yes, it is possible to maintain the room’s temperature and humidity with this gap. However, you will need a larger wine cellar cooling unit and your unit will run longer, causing an increase in expense to the homeowner’s electric bill.
The gap under the door is the most often cause of cooling loss in a wine cellar!
An easy remedy is to install an exterior door with the same weather stripping you would use if the door were to the outside. Another remedy is to install a door with an automatic door bottom. The doors offered by Wine Cellar Specialists have the option of the wood threshold or the automatic door bottom at no additional charge. This is highly recommended.
Wine Cellar Design Basics – Remember:
1. Seal any gaps.
2. A vapor barrier is absolutely necessary.
3. The more insulation, the better.

Need products that match products from the old Grotto Cellars company? Look no further!
A common question we are asked is, “can we manufacture and supply kit wine racks and even match racking for custom wine cellars consistent with the style and finish of previously purchased products from the late Grotto Cellars”.
The answer is, yes. Our factory has been exclusively manufacturing wine racks for over 10 years and has, for several clients manufactured products that are consistent with the old Grotto Cellars racking solutions.
Grotto custom wine cellars was a company that lead the custom wine cellar and wine rack market for many years before getting into financial difficulty in 2010, eventually filing for bankruptcy towards the end of that year. For people who previously purchased kit or custom wine racks from them it can therefore be a problem to source products that exactly match what they already have.
While Wine Cellar Specialists are in no way affiliated with the old Grotto Cellars company we are familiar with the designs, finishes and styles of their wine rack products.
If you have previously purchased wine rack kits or had a custom wine cellar built by Grotto in the past, and wish to add to your wine racks, or expand your existing wine cellar, by working with us at Wine Cellar Specialists you can be assured of a perfect match!

Wine Cellar Floors
Floor Preparation
When thinking about the flooring for custom wine cellars, you should remember that as part of a climate controlled room it must be prepared properly. This is an area that some people make the mistake of ignoring when creating a wine cellar in their home. If the floor in your cellar is above ground, you must add the same vapor barrier and insulation that you do to your walls and ceiling. Remember, the wine room must be wrapped up tight like a package. If your floor is on a cement slab which rests on the ground, you can get away with adding a vapor barrier only to the cement before applying your floor covering.
We recommend a product called Bostic’s MVP4. It is a Moisture Vapor Protection that is applied with a trowel and left to dry before adding your floor on top. It is usually available at your local hardware store. Once the moisture barrier is in place, you can add a plywood base or add your flooring directly on top of the vapor barrier.
Flooring Materials for Custom Wine Cellars
What you use for your actual wine cellar flooring material is up to you, as long as you stay away from anything resembling carpet. Carpet or carpet-like materials can mold or mildew in the higher humidity of a wine cellar. Slate, stone, tiles of many materials are fine in a wine cellar. Be careful of wood flooring unless it has previously been aged in a humid environment.
For a particularly special looking custom wine cellar floor reclaimed wine barrel flooring is an excellent choice and becoming more widely used in wine cellars. It is oak and made by master craftsmen from real oak wine barrels that are between 6 and 50 years old. Because these barrels previously held wine, the wood has already been exposed to extreme humidity levels. The barrels are sent through a process that implements a variety of specialized techniques to create an olde world style product line. The flooring can be glued or nailed over an area that has been prepared with a vapor barrier.
Three separate styles are available. The Cooperage flooring is made from the barrel head with all of its patina, cooperage stamps and special markings. The Wine Infusion flooring is made from the inside of the wine barrels where the wood has been naturally stained by the wine during the maturation process. The Stave flooring is created using the outside of the wine barrels. When the outside hoops are removed they leave behind distinctive markings and texture.
The wine barrel flooring is a statement of style and brings the history and aged beauty of wine into the personality of your wine cellar. A real conversation piece, this reclaimed wine barrel product is also available in drop-in ready tabletops and counter-tops.
Cork flooring is another great way to create a wine cellar floor. It is durable and very inexpensive. It is what you call a “floating floor” installation. Cork flooring comes in tongue and groove pieces that snap together and are held in place with a simple molding. Several styles, patterns and colors are available.
Both reclaimed wine barrel flooring and cork flooring are very unique and obvious ways to say “this is my special and unique wine cellar”.
