Traditional Wine Cellar Designs: Building Residential Wine Cellars for Dallas Homes

Traditional wine cellar designs, over the years, have evolved from being purely wooden wine cellars to wine rooms that also feature more advanced functionalities. For residential wine cellars in Dallas, meticulous planning and execution come hand-in-hand, especially that wine cellars are worthwhile investments in general.

Traditional Wine Cellar Designs – There Were A Lot of Changes

For this wine collector we’re featuring today, you’ll see how important it is to build your wine cellar the right way. Primarily inspired by traditional wine room designs, this client wanted his own wine cellar to house his high-end wines. He was a big wine collector and already had many in his collection which he was initially storing off-site.  Browse through the gallery below to get a sneak peek of this wine room!

Intricate Wood Racking Works for This Residential Wine Cellar in Dallas

Home wine cellars are great for entertaining, especially if you collect a wide variety of wines.  Particularly, having a traditional wine cellar design provides a very unique charm where the warm and embracing feeling of wood combines with the cozy ambiance of the LED lights.  With a traditional design, it’s going to be an inviting space where you and your guests can feel most at home and relaxed.

For this entertainment den, traditional came in the form of wooden wine racks and wooden floors. Initially, we proposed a design that was mainly comprised of 1,700 standard 750s compartments, considering the owner’s massive collection and the need for storage. Unfinished Alderwood was our first suggestion for the racking. However, as we went through the planning process, the owners were great at envisioning how they wanted the space to be. So they decided to modify the design and had us inject some interesting forms into the rack. From plain Alderwood 750s racking to a beautiful combination of different storage configurations made from Sapele Mahogany — it was an incredible transformation!

With the present set-up, there are already crate bins, display row, diamond bins, a two-door cabinet, and an alcove area where they are displaying some awesome artwork. The alcove area also doubles as a decanting space and it started with the owner telling us that he had a larger-than-a-magnum bottle that he wanted to display. We placed the alcove on the center of the racking, and it was perfect at creating symmetry!

Every corner of this wine cellar was planned with meticulous attention to detail.

We worked with IronWine Cellars to create the entire custom wine rack. The bottom shelves are double deep, while the upper ones are single deep. And because our clients wanted the racking to have a similar depth and warmth as the other woodworks have around the house, we also added Sapele Mahogany at the back of the shelves.

Keeping Wines Fresh 24/7

To give you a little background about the space, this residential wine cellar in Dallas is located above the main entry way of the house which used to be like an open attic space used only as storage. There wasn’t any insulation in every corner, but the area had huge potential.

So, we built some new walls with spray foam insulation, used engineered wood flooring and raised the floor about 6 inches up to make way for structural reinforcement, and installed floor-to-ceiling insulated glass panels for the door and viewing windows.

Traditional wine cellar designs for residential wine cellars in Dallas and other areas are always primarily characterized by wooden racks.

In order to precisely control the temperature and humidity inside, we used spray foam insulation behind the wooden walls and double insulated glass that contains a break in between for air. Although glass has a lesser R-value than spray foam insulation, doubling it and injecting it with air in between gives it some insulating capacity more than regular glass panels.

The owner also had a pool table and a large bar in the area, so having a glass entryway allows their guests to see the wine display in full view. What an awesome way to welcome visitors!

Highly Efficient Cooling System from Wine Guardian

Insulation and cooling systems always go together to keep wines fresh inside a wine room. Once we’ve setup the insulation, we brought in a half-time cooling unit from Wine Guardian, known for its stability and long-term reliability. The system is a self-contained unit that can be easily accessed and maintained right above the cellar.

The alcove caters to a very large wine bottle and is a great space for decanting.

Wine Guardian’s custom wine cellar cooling systems are some of the easiest to maintain, especially the self-contained cooling units. Even so, we still recommend that they’re periodically checked and cleaned.

Besides providing adequate cooling, the unit we used worked from day 1 right away and hasn’t had issues ever since. This is quite notable since plenty of other cooling systems need some time to adjust before they start to cool your room.

Now our client’s Red Wines, Cabernets, and Cordus bottles can now sit comfortably in their new home!

If you work with Wine Cellar Specialists, you can be confident you’ll find the right cooling solution for your unique space and get the right professional advice for the rest of your custom wine cellar needs.

The addition of diamond bins, display rows, and crate bins was a great way to take this residential wine cellar in Dallas to the next level.

Deep Lighting to Make a Timeless Ambiance

The final touch to a wine cellar involves lighting that helps curate the vibe. LED lighting is found to be the better kind of light for wines, as it doesn’t produce heat as much as other types of lights do. For this custom wine room, we went for simple LED can lights on the ceiling and alcove area, and ribbon lights that run all the way around the display rows. A chandelier can also be seen at the center of the ceiling which also came with a contemporary design, fit with the rest of the cellar.

Overall, this entire custom wine cellar took about 6 months to complete (1 month for design phase, then ordering phase, and about 3 months until it was completed). This is surprising and relatively quite fast considering the scale of the project and the many changes we had to make along the way!
