Mahogany is one of the most popular materials for wooden wine racks in residential wine rooms. Owners, as well as designers, appreciate its beauty when trying to blend function with style. In the case of this client, we used a certain type of Mahogany for the wine rack — Sapele. Our client requested that the wine room embody both practicality, expansive storage, and a beautiful display. With Sapele Mahoganywe found a wood choice that allowed us to do exactly that.

Designing Mahogany Wooden Wine Rack for a Residential Wine Room

As mentioned, the client wanted to achieve the functionality of wine storage without compromising the aesthetic look of the room. Sapele Mahogany became the foundation or starting point of our approach in this stunning home wine room.

This Mahogany wooden wine rack features case storage and diamond bins in Sapele with lacquer coat protection. To preserve the natural brown and hints of red of the material, the designer didn’t use any sort of stain. When it comes to storage, the owner can store individual 750ml bottles as well as 1.5L or magnum wine bottles.

The main reason why we like to use Sapele wood is its support for wide range of applications. It can be used for building guitars, window frames, doors, flooring, cabinetry, and it’s an excellent choice for wooden wine racking. And these are just some of its common uses. In this cellar, you can easily see how Sapele Mahogany wood wine racking creates a beautiful environment in the wine room and ties beautifully into the décor in this lovely Dallas home.

Differences between Mahogany and Sapele

There are some key differences between Sapele and a more traditional Mahogany. Sapele is a member of the Mahogany family, but it has some characteristics and qualities that differentiate it from other Mahogany subtypesThere are both benefits and challenges when it comes to this beautiful wood.

Sapele, sometimes called Sapele Mahogany, is sometimes used as a substitute for more traditional Mahogany types. As a raw material, the average dried weight of Sapele is slightly heavier than Mahogany. Thus, it provides a more substantial feel in the hand.

The same goes for their Janka Hardness, or the resistance ability of wood to wear and dent. For the client’s Sepele Mahogany wooden wine rack, this means better longevity.

In terms of cost, Sapele isn’t an overly expensive material to use. Its sheer popularity makes it an affordable material choice for wine storage owners.
